Wisdom tooth removal in Malta, from a simple extraction to an impacted tooth
Whether a wisdom tooth is aching, keeps getting infected, or has shown up as a problem on an X-ray, we assess it properly first and then remove it gently under local anaesthetic — at either of our two clinics in Birkirkara.

Not every wisdom tooth has to come out
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, usually in the late teens or early twenties. If there is room for them and they come through cleanly, they are best left where they are. The trouble starts when the jaw does not have the space: the tooth comes through at an angle, only partly emerges, or stays stuck under the gum. A partly erupted tooth is hard to clean, so it is more likely to decay or to cause the gum around it to flare up again and again. Our first job is to work out whether your wisdom tooth genuinely needs removing or is better left alone — and to tell you honestly which it is.

We advise removal only when there is a real reason

We look before we decide
Before anything is decided, we examine the tooth and the gum around it and usually take an X-ray. That shows the shape and depth of the roots and, for the lower wisdom teeth, how close the tooth sits to the nerve that runs through the jaw. For the more involved cases a 3D CBCT scan maps that nerve precisely. Knowing all of this in advance is what lets us tell you whether the tooth will come out simply or needs a surgical approach, how long it is likely to take, and what it will cost — before you commit to anything.

Examination and X-ray
We look at the tooth and the gum around it, then usually take an X-ray so we can see the whole root and how close it sits to the nerve and the sinus. A small X-ray is €20; for a fuller picture a panoramic X-ray of the whole mouth is €70, and for the trickier lower wisdom teeth a 3D CBCT scan (€120) shows exactly where the nerve runs. That tells us whether the tooth will come out simply or needs a surgical approach.
A clear plan and price first
Once we know the position of the tooth, we explain whether it is a simple extraction or a surgical one, how long it is likely to take, and what it will cost — before anything is done. If more than one tooth is involved, we talk through whether to do them together or one at a time.
The removal
The area is fully numbed with local anaesthetic, so you are awake but feel pressure rather than pain. A straightforward tooth is eased out whole; an impacted or awkward one is sometimes taken out in sections, and a small flap of gum may be lifted to reach it. Most wisdom teeth take between fifteen and forty-five minutes.
Aftercare and healing
We place any stitches that are needed, give you gauze to bite on, and go through the aftercare in person. Some swelling, mild discomfort and bruising of the cheek are normal for a few days and settle steadily. We tell you what to expect and how to reach us if anything worries you.
Simple and surgical wisdom tooth removal, and what each one means
Most wisdom teeth fall into one of these. Each is carried out under local anaesthetic, and each is explained and priced before it is done.
A simple extraction
For a wisdom tooth that has come through the gum and can be eased out whole, much like any other back tooth. A simple extraction starts from €60; X-rays are added only if they are needed.
A surgical extraction
For an impacted tooth, one lying at an angle, or one still partly under the gum. A small flap of gum is lifted and the tooth is sometimes removed in sections. A wisdom tooth surgical extraction is €250.
Imaging and planning
A small X-ray is €20, a panoramic X-ray of the whole mouth is €70, and a 3D CBCT scan — used where the tooth sits near the nerve — is €120.
If it has flared up
An infected or painful wisdom tooth often needs seeing quickly. Trident Park keeps Sunday mornings for emergencies, and during the week we try to see painful cases the same day.
Part of your general care
Wisdom tooth removal is a routine part of general dentistry. If you are also due a check-up or a clean, we can look at everything together and put it in order of what matters most.

Looking after yourself afterwards
For the first few days after a wisdom tooth comes out, sticking to soft foods, keeping the area clean without poking at the healing socket, and avoiding smoking all help it settle comfortably. Mild swelling and some bruising of the cheek are normal and ease within a few days. If the pain or swelling gets worse rather than better, if you run a fever, or if swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, contact us promptly — and if you ever struggle to breathe or swallow, go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department. We go through all of this with you in person and tell you how to reach us.

Transparent pricing — no surprises
What wisdom tooth removal costs depends on the tooth: whether it has come through or is impacted, how the roots sit, and whether it can be eased out whole or needs a surgical approach. The X-ray or scan that shows us this is added only when it is needed. You have the exact figure in writing before anything is done, with no hidden extras.
